Seminar on teaching, learning and assessing English language proficiency using TOEIC benchmark

On 6th March 2011, Rubber Industrial College (RIC) in coordination with IIG Vietnam held a seminar on Teaching, Learning and Assessing English Language Proficienty using TOEIC benchmark with the participation of RIC teachers and student.

In the opening speech, Mr. Pham Van Nha, RIC’s principal released that “On the basis of RIC’s development strategy, foreign language in general and English in particular will play a key role in its integration and development process. However, there is a fact that most of graduate students cannot meet the English requirements when entering labour market.,Therefore, it is the reason why RIC managing board has decided to enter cooperation with IIG Vietnam – the country representative of Educational Testing Service (ETS). According to that, RIC is appointed to be the exclusively authorized test site in Binh Phuoc province in administering TOEIC, TOEFL ITP tests andsince 2010 – 2011 academic year, TOEIC will be used as placement test for 1st year students and exit exam for student graduation. In 2010, RIC also officially set TOEIC benchmark for exit exam of 200 and 300 forsecondary and college students respectively. Entering cooperation with IIG Vietnam will facilitate RIC teachers to get access to TOEIC – oriented English teaching method; concurrently organize English training courses for Vietnam Rubber Group’s staff at all levels.

The seminar also welcomed the participation of representatives from IIG Vietnam, University of Technology – Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnamese American Vocational Training College (VATC) who have shared experience as well as practical examples applying international TOEIC standard in English teaching, learning and assessing.

The seminar overview

Ending of the seminar, RIC managing board would like to cooperate with organizations, schools in Binh Phuoc province in order to boost the local foreign language learning movement; thereby, effectively contributing to the implementation of No 1400/ QĐ-TTG decision dated 30th September 2008 of Prime Minister on the Project “Foreign language teaching and learning in national education system 2008 – 2020 period”
