1. OVERVIEW

Prospective graduate school applicants across a wide range of disciplines take the GRE General Test. GRE scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement their undergraduate records, recommendation letters and other qualifications for graduate-level study. Some Subject Tests yield sub-scores that can indicate the strengths and weaknesses in an individual test taker’s preparation and may also be useful for guidance and placement purposes.

2. Benefits of the GRE Test

The GRE General Test and GRE Subject Tests were designed to achieve a specific intended purpose that adds value to the admissions decision-making process. Understanding what the tests were designed to measure and predict can help administrators and faculty assign an appropriate role for the use of test scores, without over-relying upon them to accomplish more than they can.

3.2 The GRE Subject tests

The GRE Subject Tests measure achievement in specific subject areas and assume undergraduate majors or extensive background in those disciplines. These tests are available in the following disciplines:

  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology

Beginning in September 2023, the GRE Subject Tests will be administered on computer worldwide on the dates below. At home testing will also be offered in most locations.

  • September 14, 2026, through September 27, 2026
  • October 19, 2026, through November 1, 2026
  • April 19, 2027, through May 2, 2027

Note that the GRE Chemistry Test was discontinued in May 2023. The GRE Biology Test and the GRE Literature in English Test were discontinued in May 2021. Scores on these tests will continue to be reportable for 5 years per GRE score reporting policy.

GRE Subject Test Scoring:

Every Subject Test yields a total score on a 200 to 990 score scale, in 10-point increments. Note that each of the individual test scales occupies only a portion of the 200 to 990 score range.

For Physics and Psychology Tests taken beginning in September 2023, percent correct subscores are reported on a 0–100 score scale, in 1-point increments.

For Physics and Psychology Tests taken prior to September 2023, equated subscores are reported on a 20–99 score scale, in 1-point increments, although the range for any particular Subject Test subscore is usually smaller.

Total testing time:

Testing time for the GRE Mathematics Test is 2 hours and 50 minutes. Testing time for the GRE Physics Test and Psychology Test is 2 hours.
